2019
January. In contrast to the previous January, January 2019 tended to be more on the anticyclonic side. It was the most anticyclonic January since 2006. The CET was 4.0c which is slightly cooler than the 1981-2010 average and was the same CET as January 2017. The month consisted of two halves with the first half being on the milder side but this was offset in the CET by the colder second half whilst it was milder over Ireland and to the north of the UK. High pressure from the end of December continued into the start of January resulting in plentiful dry weather but also cloudy which meant conditions were mild. A northerly regime on the 16th heralded a change ushering in a colder spell of weather with the exception of some mild weather from the 24th to 26th which featured the mildest weather of the entire month generally. Slapton, Devon recorded the maximum temperature for the month with 14.2c on the 25th whilst 13.3c was recorded at Finner Camp, Co. Donegal on the 7th. The last few days of January were dominated by a cold northwesterly pattern with polar maritime air from the North Atlantic. Heavy outbreaks of snow on the 30th/31st January resulted in school closures in Wales, Cornwall and Hampshire. Braemar, Aberdeenshire recorded an air minimum of -14.3c on the 31st, the lowest January temperature in the UK since 2010. Dublin Airport, Co. Dublin recorded an air minimum of -5.8c on the same day, its lowest January temperature since 2015. It was the 9th driest January on record for the UK back to 1910. The northeast was favoured in terms of sunshine during January 2019 with Scotland having its 10th sunniest January on record back to 1929. In contrast, Camborne, Cornwall recorded its dullest January on record back to 1961 with 28 hours of sunshine. Similarly, Knock Airport, Co. Mayo in the west of Ireland recorded its dullest January on record since records began in 1996 with 18 hours of sunshine.
